LAB-545 is a hub for creation, production and social innovation led by Ateliers Belleville. Our mission is to offer affordable, collaborative workspaces to Montreal artists and artisans, while fostering the sharing of knowledge, sustainability and inclusion.
LAB-545 brings together several specialized workshops (wood, metal, ceramics and digital fabrication) and acts as a catalyst for an engaged creative community.
As part of the opening of its ceramics and digital fabrication workshops, LAB-545 is looking for a person who will work closely with co-management and coordination to ensure:
the technical setup and layout of the spaces,
operational management,
support for users,
as well as compliance with safety, sustainability and accessibility protocols.
Layout and installation
In partnership with the 2 committees (ceramics and FabLab), participate in the design of functional and safe layout plans for the workshops.
Install, calibrate, and configure the equipment:
Ceramics: wheels, electric kilns, glazing station, extraction booths, clay recycler, ventilation systems.
Digital fabrication: 3D printers (FDM, resin), laser cutting, CNC (small and medium format), prototyping stations, control computers.
Define and document the maintenance, safety, and equipment use protocols.
Collaborate with suppliers, technicians, and contractors for commissioning and technical inspections.
Maintenance and equipment management
Ensure preventive and corrective maintenance of machines and systems.
Keep the maintenance schedule, equipment sheets, and compliance registers up to date.
Manage inventories of consumables and spare parts (sensors, belts, nozzles, filters, clays, glazes, etc.).
Oversee electrical compliance, ventilation, and waste management in accordance with current standards.
User support
Supervise and train artists and craftspeople on the equipment and associated software:
Software: Fusion 360, Rhino, Blender, Illustrator, Cura, LightBurn, SketchUp, etc.
Ceramic processes: shaping, throwing, molding, firing, glazing, kiln cycles.
Establish and enforce booking, safety, and shared-use protocols.
Diagnose and resolve technical problems encountered by users.
Contribute to the documentation and updating of internal user manuals.
Development and optimization
Propose technical improvements to optimize workflows and safety.
Participate in the design of training sessions and collaborative projects incorporating hybrid technologies (e.g., ceramic 3D printing, CNC molds, etc.).
Integrate eco-responsible practices: recycling and reuse of materials, waste reduction, management of wastewater and fine dust.
Education and Experience
Degree or equivalent experience in design, digital fabrication, ceramics, materials engineering, visual arts, or craftsmanship.
Minimum 3 years of experience in workshop management, technical maintenance, or fabrication lab coordination.
Strong skills in troubleshooting, calibration, and maintenance of digital machines.
Good knowledge of firing processes and safety protocols related to ceramic kilns (ventilation, thermal control, insulation).
Technical Skills
Proficiency in at least one 3D modeling platform (e.g., Fusion 360, Rhino, Blender, SolidWorks).
Familiarity with CAM control interfaces (Tool Path, slicers, e.g., LightBurn, Fusion Cam, Bamboo Studio).
Basic knowledge of electricity, fine mechanics, and air extraction systems.
Knowledge of materials: clays, plasters, polymers, wood, light metals, resins, and plastics.
General Skills
Excellent time management and ability to work under tight deadlines, in coordination with co-management and the LAB-545 team.
Excellent experience in project management and production.
Technical rigor, safety awareness, and attention to detail.
Team spirit, sense of collaboration, and interest in knowledge sharing.
Analytical mindset, ability to document and standardize processes.
